You Scratch My Back… (DoFollow)

It’s always good to give something back.

So by way of thanks for all the encouragement & feedback I’ve been sent recently via our blog comments I’d like to offer you guys some things in return:

BlogPiG is Now DoFollow!

We’re enabling dofollow on your blog comments so you get the link juice for all your hard work. For obvious reasons we cannot just enable dofollow on all comments, that would lead to a spam tsunami. Instead we’re rewarding our most generous members.

Anyone with 10 or more approved comments is automatically promoted to DoFollow status on all their past a future comments.

Our DoFollow heroes will see a star icon appear next to their username in the comments section when DoFollow status is achieved.

Basic anti-abuse rules apply:

  • We dofollow link your comment username
  • Use Your name or nickname NOT “Golf Clubs” etc. that sucks.
  • No pointless links in the comment body
  • Be consistent with your comment email address
  • Only useful & relevant comments are approved
  • Username should be linked your FaceBook or Twitter or personal blog

Get a Gravatar Already

If you’ve not setup your Gravatar, why not? It takes 2 minutes and it makes much more fun to respond to real people when I’m answering comments. We’ve also improved the recent comments widget to display all the latest comments with a lovely mugshot from your gravatar, you can see it in action here. This is a great way to build a public profile.

If you don’t have a Gravatar it’s a free service run by the folks behind WordPress – get one here.

Comments = Prizes

Lower down you’ll another widget with a league table for the top comments this month. On the first working day of each month I’ll give a free Pro license for any one of our products to whoever had the most comments for the previous month.

Just another way of saying thank you.

I’m also testing CommentLuv, KeywordLuv, and rewards for retweets and FB Likes but that’s a bit more tricky to setup – stand by for more info soon.

Do you have other ideas or suggestions?

Do you think this is cool or dumb?

Is anybody out there….?

Very creative approach. It’s kind of a contest where there can be many winners.

As our lottery advert in the UK says “It could be you!”

Interesting feature. I already seen such promotions based on post count in some forums, but it is the first time I see this for blog comments !

Anyway, this is my first post, hope I will find useful things to say to reach 10 quickly !

An happy TagPIG user, writing from Switzerland :)

Good for you David, you’ll be there in no time. Just keep talking from the heart.

And I’m glad you like TagPiG. Tried CommentPiG yet?

This is a great idea to get more comments. I think that more blogs should have dofollow links. Unfortunately we are all obsessed with follow, nofollow, index, noindex, when we really should just be focusing on creating good content.

Thanks, you make a good point. Good content is what keeps the whole thing ticking. That’s why a wanted to give people who right good content (comments) on my blog the chance to link it back to themselves, it just seems…..fair.

ps. now get a gravatar already :)

    Nice move.

Personally I was always hesitant to “bribe” people for more comments – but that way it makes sense, will not encourage the spammers and bots too much, and reward regular readers/commenters.

Looks like something I will implement on some of my sites as well… ;-)
    Thanks for the idea!

Yes, I was hessitant but I figure if people are giving me free content (comments) then I should at least allow them to reference where it came from.

Glad you liked the idea. I can share the plugins I’ve used so far to implement it if you want?

wow, Gary, if that is not a super-secret home brew you are using for it – please share the wisdom! Would be awesome and save me (and probably others) quite some trial&error…

Okay, not a problem, I’ll write it up into a post if others find it interesting too. It’s a bit rough & ready right now as it uses a few different plugins, once I know exactly what I want I’ll probably have it coded it into a single plugin.

At the moment it’s +10 comments and you go dofollow permanently, I’d like it to be a rolling 30/60 day average, that would ensure loyality and regular generosity was rewarded.

Yes, I’m hoping the 10 comment limit will keep out all but the most determined spammers… we’ll see, it’s an experiment.

I like this idea! Cajoling people into comments – and real gravatars. Using TagPIG right now and trying CommentPIG next week. Love the products – easy to use and effective. Thanks!

      Hi Pankaj,

interesting questions! I don’t know of a WP plugin for this, and I don’t know of any data but I will look into it. Is anyone else able to answer Pankaj’s question?
